Tyler, you have quite a few roles. How did you become a filmmaker, writer, public speaker AND entrepreneur? Since young age I have been infatuated with the arts, but when I was 21 years old I left university and went into a deep depression. I decided that instead of doing what everyone else wants me to do, I would do the things I am passionate about. I decided that I wanted to use my talents to help people with their mental health and as a form of therapy.
What helped you get rid of your depression? I know it is an insidious illness that can pop up when one least expects it. Becoming mindful helped with my depression. When you are thinking and worrying so much about the past and future, it is easy to become deeply depressed. I re-learned how to live in the present moment, in totality. Meditation, yoga, and floatation tanks help with this.
What is mindfulness? Can one learn it? Mindfulness is a state of awareness and clarity. It’s the ability to observe the mind and live in a state of appreciation for life.
Mindfulness is something we all understood as children but with everything going on in our busy lives it’s easy for us to become less mindful. When learning mindfulness, you are really just re-learning the way you lived as a child. Appreciating the present moment.
How can one use their talents to help end stigma and promote mindfulness? What type of stigma do you mean? There is a stigma that comes along with having a mental illness. Many people are afraid to talk about their mental health because they are afraid to be judged. I feel that it is my job to start that conversation.
How does one come out with a clothing line? Is it difficult? It is difficult starting a clothing line. Especially for me, because I’m such a perfectionist. I have had the idea for years and just began selling it exclusively. When I was ready to start selling the items I had to stop judging myself and overthinking everything.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time? In five years, I see myself as a happy individual, influencing people around the world… Making them happy. I see myself with love and stability in 5 years.
